Liposuction for Men
Male Liposuction

Traditionally, figure-refining cosmetic surgical procedures such as liposuction have been associated with women; however, it is becoming increasingly common for men to undergo liposuction and many other body sculpting procedures. In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 12 percent of the liposuction procedures performed in the United States in 2005 were performed on male patients. As a growing number of men turn to plastic surgery to refine their appearance, male liposuction promises to become an even more popular cosmetic surgery option. Use this page to learn more about liposuction for men, including the cost of male liposuction and the areas of the body men most commonly choose to sculpt with liposuction.

Cost of Liposuction for Men

Male liposuction is typically slightly more expensive than liposuction for women. There are three main reasons for the price discrepancy between liposuction for men and for women. First, the fat found on the male physique is generally more fibrous than that found on women's bodies, so it is more difficult and time consuming for surgeons to remove. Second, men usually request liposuction to areas of their bodies that are naturally more fibrous to begin with, such as the chest, love handles, and abdomen. Third, men are typically larger than women, so male liposuction often involves the treatment of a larger area than female liposuction. Areas of the Face and Body Treatable with Liposuction

There are a number of areas of the body that are common targets for liposuction for men. Liposuction can be very helpful in reducing the appearance of "love handles," or excess fat around the abdominal area. Many men have a hard time losing weight in this area despite diet and exercise. Likewise, another common area of the body for male liposuction is the abdomen, an area that is notoriously difficult to tone.

Liposuction for men is not just limited to the body: more and more, men are turning to liposuction to slim and rejuvenate their faces. Some common areas for male facial liposuction are the chin, neck, and jowls. Removing fat from these areas can restore definition to facial features and give the patient an overall more youthful and well-rested appearance.

Liposuction of Male Breasts

Another common use of liposuction for men is in the treatment of gynecomastia, or the abnormal enlargement of the male breast. Often caused by hormonal imbalance, gynecomastia can describe the accumulation of either fat or glandular tissue in the breast area. Liposuction, sometimes used in conjunction with other surgical techniques, is extremely effective in reducing the size and volume of male breasts. In many cases, liposuction is performed through such tiny incisions that scarring is minimal or virtually nonexistent.

While liposuction can often be used as a form of breast reduction in men, it is important that the surgeon first determine whether the excess tissue in the breast is fatty or glandular. If the enlarged breast is composed primarily of fatty tissue, then liposuction is an excellent method for reducing the size and improving the appearance of the chest.

If a man's breasts are enlarged with glandular tissue, liposuction is not an option and other hormonal or medication therapies should be pursued. If the breasts are asymmetrical or oddly shaped, the patient should be examined for possible tumors prior to any surgical intervention. A mammogram is the most effective method for detecting tumors and the possible presence of male breast cancer.
