Breast Augmentation
Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation surgery involves using breast implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts (breast enlargement) or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy (breast enhancement).

What You Should Know Before Breast Augmentation Surgery

The success and safety of your breast augmentation procedure depends very much on your being completely candid during your consultation. By being actively involved your consultation about breast augmentation, problems, concerns and questions you may have can be addressed by your ASPS Member Surgeon. You'll be asked a number of questions about your health, desires and lifestyle.

Be prepared to discuss:
  • Why you want breast augmentation surgery, your expectations and desired outcome
  • Medical conditions, drug allergies and medical treatments
  • Use of current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs
  • Previous surgeries
  • Family history of breast cancer and results of any mammograms or previous biopsies
  • Today, women are choosing breast augmentation to enhance their profile and improve the appearance of breasts that show signs of aging or changes after child bearing.
  • Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic plastic surgery. There were 364,610 breast augmentation procedures in 2005, a 9 percent increase from 2004, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Basics of Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed by inserting a breast implant behind breast tissue or above the breast muscle. Implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with varying designs, in a range of materials. They can be placed in different positions through a variety of incision locations.

Breast surgery is a medical procedure that requires advanced surgical skill. The goal is to leave your breasts looking as natural as possible, while enlarging them to your desired size. Because of the surgery's complexity, you are better off using a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience in all aspects of breast enhancement.

Breast Augmentation with Lowering of the
Inframammary Fold

Some women have a short distance from the areola to the inframammary fold of the breast. Many of these patients wish to increase this distance and the "fullness" of the lower pole of the breasts. This distance can be increased in the operating room and the fullness of the lower pole of the breasts enhanced with implants.

Careful measurements are made in order to achieve as much symmetry as possible, and care is taken to avoid over-dissection and a resulting "bottoming out" of the implants.

This procedure can be used for patients with tubular or "constricted" breasts as well, to help achieve a fuller, rounder appearance. Settling of the implants may take three to 12 months after surgery.

Breast Lift with Breast Augmentation

The plastic surgeon may recommend that a breast lift and breast augmentation be performed at the same time. This is most commonly recommended to treat the sagging appearance that results from aging or pregnancy. During this combined procedure, some breast tissue is removed, the breast skin is tightened and lifted and an implant is inserted.
